Dr. Nic Butler, historian at the Charleston County Public Library and creator of the Charleston Time Machine, will present Privateers on the South Carolina Coast in the 1740s!
The War of Jenkins' Ear (1739-48) transformed the coast of South Carolina into a hotbed of privateer activity involving a multitude of British, Spanish, and French vessels of varying shapes and sizes. Although maritime scholars have largely ignored this aspect of the war, the extant documentary sources contain a wealth of information about the ships and the men who plied these waters in the 1740s.
