Jazz at the Winyah:  Jeff DiMaio Trio (New York)

Preferred Seating: $25         General Seating:  $20

“You can’t explain jazz to anyone without losing the experience because it’s feeling, not words.”  These musings by the immortal Bill Evans, perhaps the finest jazz pianist of our genre, serve as the inspiration for the members of the Jeff DiMaio Trio.  Tunes by Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Bill Evans, Miles Davis and other giants of the industry dominate their program and define the group.  Jeff DiMaio plays keyboard and is the leader of the trio.  Jeff has been playing for over fifty years, having worked alongside Frank Sinatra and opened for Tony Bennett, and he has established himself as one of the premier, sought after piano players in the New York City music scene.  Come hear Jeff’s haunting interpretation of Fragile, by Sting, or the nostalgic melody of Bill Evan’s Letter to Evan. The dazzling tempo of Sergio Mendes signature song, Mas Que Nada, will leave you breathless. You’ll also recognize such familiar tunes as the Beatles’ Eleanor Rigby and Norwegian Wood, and marvel at the twists Jeff gives these iconic works.  Jeff is artfully supported by their very talented bass player, Bryan Whitfield.  Bryan studied music at the College of William and Mary and played for many years in and around Washington, DC, as well as the Williamsburg/Newport News/Norfolk area.  He has played with Bruce Hornsby and members of both Chuck Mangione’s band and the Dorsey bands.  Rounding out the trio is their highly skilled drummer, Bruce York.  Bruce earned his Bachelor of Music degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, which has long been recognized as one of the most well-respected music institutions in the United States.  He has played in New York for a number of years, as well as at venues all over the southeast.  Bruce has also played with the Greensboro Symphony and locally with the Long Bay Symphony.   He currently serves as lead percussionist with the Pawleys Island Concert Band, Pawleys Island Jazz Band, and several smaller ensemble groups.  If you love jazz but can only attend one performance at Winyah Auditorium this year, you can’t miss the Jeff DiMaio Trio!
